About The Position

This posting is for an Incident Management Assistance Patrol (IMAP) Responder I within the Eastern Regional TMC IMAP unit. This position will patrol IMAP routes in Divisions 4 and 6. The work will involve operation of an IMAP vehicle, traffic control deployments, route surveillance, incident response, removal of disabled and abandoned vehicles, incident/congestion management, and performing routine motorist assistance duties and debris removal to facilitate traffic flow and minimize congestion. This position also is responsible for communicating via two-way radio with the TMC dispatch as well as other first responder agencies for appropriate coordination as needed. Employees in this class do not supervise but can function as lead workers and/or provide on-the- job training. Additionally, Employees will need to successfully pass both classroom training related to safety, IMAP and traffic management operations and a field assessment review. This role requires the ability to work independently, think critically, prioritize and control situations, and make decisions quickly under extreme pressure or in a hazardous environment. This role requires the ability to perform routine tasks, to move or lift heavy objects, to work in a variety of weather conditions, including rain, snow, heat, and ice, and to apply all computer applications required to perform the job, including Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), SAP (timesheets), Outlook (email), Excel (spreadsheets), Word, and any other laptop applications as necessary (incident reports, logs). In addition, the responder must have the ability to maintain basic first aid and CPR training, to work outside of normal shift hours in the event of larger after-hours incidents or incidents that extend beyond normal working hours, and to skillfully maneuver IMAP vehicle in all weather and traffic conditions while communicating with other units and response partners. This role requires the ability to be agile enough to respond and move quickly around fast-moving vehicles unassisted, to lift at least 50 pounds unassisted, to walk long distance multiples times throughout the day, and to change a tire unassisted. Related experience will be given for experience in the following areas which is document on the application: a) emergency response work; b) medical services; c) protective services in law enforcement/fire/inspection/arson/correctional/security; d) highway/bridge maintenance or construction; e) automotive/maintenance, towing industry, and/or repair.   • The successful applicant must hold and keep current CPR Certification within 6 months of employment
  • The successful applicant must hold and keep current NCDOT IMAP Certification within 6 months of employment
  • All members shall maintain a neat, well-groomed appearance while on duty.
  • Safety toe shoes required.
  • The selected applicant will be required to legally operate a motor vehicle.
  • The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position.
  • As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
  • Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Employees will be subject to outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic.
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of fire safety (including the ability to operate a fire extinguisher)
  • Experience in minor mechanical repairs
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a utility truck with winch, traffic control devices
  • Knowledge of two-way radio systems and phone communications
  • Knowledge of dynamics of traffic control implementation based on roadway features, highway geometry, and weather conditions
