About The Position

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This is an extended posting through August 29, 2025, for Transportation Worker I positions in Division 14, Macon County. Multiple Transportation Worker I positions will be filled from each extended county posting. Interested applicants will only have to apply one time to be considered for all our Transportation Worker I vacancies in each respective county during this time frame. However, if an applicant is interested in applying for a Transportation Worker I position in more than one county, they will need to apply to each respective county posting for which they are seeking employment. These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave, etc. Work in this class primarily involves the operation of standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment utilized in the preventative maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features for the State's highway and roadway systems. Other duties include inspecting, ensuring work zone safety, and participating in snow & ice removal.

Requirements

  • Experience operating power tools such as chainsaw, weed eater, skill saw, drill, compactor, jackhammer, etc.
  • Experience using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc.
  • Experience performing manual labor.
  • Must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions.
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, or obtain it within 360 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • High school education or General Educational Development Diploma.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operate standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment for maintenance, repair, and construction of roads.
  • Inspect work zones and ensure safety.
  • Participate in snow and ice removal.
  • Assist with maintenance and repair project completion using various tools and equipment.
  • Erect road signs and assist Electronics Technicians with maintenance and installation of signals.
  • Perform vegetation control and debris removal.
  • Assist in grass and wildflower installation and maintenance.
  • Assist with carpentry, welding, steel fabrication, or concrete work activities.
