About The Position

This is an anticipated vacancy - November 30, 2025. This position serves as a Transportation Supervisor II within the Forsyth County Maintenance Unit. Positions in this class are characterized by their supervision of one or more crews in the most complex transportation maintenance work covering the maintenance and repair of State-Maintained roads including, but not limited to; working in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment and with power tools to perform pavement patching, drainage maintenance, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal, scheduled night work and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. Position will investigate and answer concerns from the public. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions and the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes utilizing NCDOT required Proper Protective Equipment, following the OSHR and NCDOT Safety Policy and Procedure Manual. This position is subject to emergency call back and will be required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. The recommended applicants must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently as needed. Position is responsible for the counsel and discipline of employees; monitoring of expenditures, maintaining work records, time sheets, job reports, and inventory records; planning work operations and adjusting work assignments; training employees on-the-job; conducting performance reviews; assisting with interviewing and recommending new staff. Position responsible for ensuring equipment is maintained and serviced as required. Position must routinely determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish standard and non-standard work assignments.

Requirements

  • Experience in filling out daily work sheets that documents personnel, equipment and location worked.
  • Experience in calculating quantities of material needed for work crews to perform daily functions.

  • Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.
  • This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.
  • The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement.
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Pre-employment drug testing will be required.
  • As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
  • Safety-toed shoes required.
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and seven years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
