About The Position

This is a part-time, up to 30-hour-per-week paid position with the Institute for Human Services, Inc. (IHS), a nonprofit organization located in Bath, N.Y. The position is contracted to work with the Steuben County Office for the Aging (SCOFA) and is assigned to the Bath office, providing transportation services to eligible older adults throughout Steuben County. The Van Driver is a member of the SCOFA team and plays a key role in the development and delivery of a growing countywide transportation program. This program aims to improve access to essential services, reduce isolation, and support independent living for adults age 60 and older, particularly those in rural and underserved areas, while piloting creative and responsive service models that reflect Steuben County's diverse geography and needs. This position includes both driving and significant logistics, operational planning, and program-development responsibilities. The role may expand to full-time based on program growth.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least one year of professional driving experience and one year of administrative, customer service, or logistics-related experience preferred. An equivalent combination of relevant experience may be considered.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the ability to work independently, follow evolving procedures, and assist in the development of new program systems and workflows.
  • Must possess strong judgment and the ability to apply established safety and operational procedures while adapting to new program requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret professional materials, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to write reports, maintain accurate records, and communicate effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work respectfully with older adults from diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Basic computer and internet proficiency.
  • Valid NYS driver's license
  • Selected candidates must successfully complete a background check and drug screening as part of the hiring process.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, reach, stoop, kneel, and talk or hear.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 30 lbs. frequently.
  • Ability to Assist ambulatory riders safely.
  • Ability to operate vehicles in varied weather and rural terrain.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate two program vehicles: A 14-passenger Ford Transit high-top van reserved for ambulatory riders who can board independently or with minimal assistance. A wheelchair-accessible minivan primarily used for riders using mobility devices.
  • Operate ramps/lifts and secure wheelchairs or scooters using approved restraints.
  • Ensure all riders are properly seated and secured prior to movement.
  • Assist riders with entering and exiting vehicles within permitted guidelines (supportive arm only; no lifting or transfers).
  • Transport riders to designated destinations and provide group transportation for grocery shopping and other approved activities.
  • Lift and move grocery bags or personal items up to 30 pounds to assist riders in storing items within the vehicle.
  • Screen new clients to determine eligibility, transportation needs, safety considerations, and appropriate vehicle assignment.
  • Confirm rider information, trip purpose, mobility needs, and independence requirements prior to scheduling.
  • Ensure all riders complete required consent for data tracking before receiving services.
  • Develop and adjust driving routes across Steuben.
  • Schedule riders, confirm appointments, and maintain effective communication regarding pickup times.
  • Adapt routing and service models as the program grows.
  • Help establish policies, procedures, and operational workflows for an expanding transportation program.
  • Identify operational issues, propose solutions, and participate in pilot testing new procedures.
  • Exercise initiative and sound judgment in adapting to evolving program needs.
  • Track riders, units of service, mileage, routes, screenings, and trip outcomes.
  • Maintain vehicle logs, incident reports, and required documentation.
  • Document consumer concerns and incidents in accordance with protocols.
  • Support outreach efforts promoting transportation services.
  • Provide feedback from riders to improve service delivery.
  • Coordinate with volunteers assisting with rider support and shopping tasks.
