About The Position

This position provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving design, projects, construction of transportation systems, and traffic operations in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline. Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year per year basis.
  • Transportation Specialist II: 4 YEARS Transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection
  • Transportation Specialist III: 5 YEARS Transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection
  • Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis OR related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Applicable analysis methodologies
  • Traffic operations engineering principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory
  • Design and plan preparation methods and requirements
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Contract development and oversight
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
  • Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities
  • Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long-term deadlines
  • Persuasion and negotiation of critical issues
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; make decisions that support business objectives and goals
  • Program/project planning, development, and management methodologies
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as program coordinator responsible for coordination of advanced engineering/architectural projects from initiation to completion.
  • Assists with project assignments and determining work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.
  • Coordinates communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
  • Coordinates design work among TxDOT entities, consultants and contractors.
  • Coordinates permit operations.
  • Coordinates with staff and/or area engineers regarding construction operations as they relate to contract administration, programming, planning, design, right-of-way and maintenance operations.
  • Meets with the public to discuss complaints and coordinates proposals with other governmental officials.
  • Represents the Department at various meetings.
  • Serves as a liaison with city, county and other governmental and private entities concerning traffic issues and works to establish viable solutions.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assists in overseeing design work among TxDOT entities, consultants and contractors.
  • Assists in overseeing project assignments and determining work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.
  • Serves as program coordinator responsible for coordination of highly advanced engineering/architectural projects from initiation to completion.
  • Oversees permit operations.
