About The Position

The Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking a Transportation Senior Operations Technician for a position District Maintenance and Fleet Division. This position is responsible for assisting the Supervisor in leading a team in providing the safe and efficient movement of people and goods. The Senior Technician will be the Crew Leader for day-to-day work activities, following the direction of the Supervisor, and may act as a supervisor in their absence. The main duties of this position revolve around winter maintenance, including plowing with specialized equipment and treating roads with winter materials. Secondary activities include maintenance and supervisory work on roads, bridges, culverts, and related properties. The incumbent will enforce proper safety practices and will assist in train employees accordingly. Candidates should have strong leadership skills, in addition to considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment used in transportation maintenance activities. You must apply online to be considered. Environmental FactorsDuties require exposure to extreme outdoor weather. An incumbent must be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their work schedule and work area and must be reachable by phone. An employee must be able to use tools, equipment and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work. Normal dangers associated with work on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and debris from roadside litter are present. May be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens. Hazards are always present when working on roads with moving traffic. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required. Considerable overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of transportation maintenance or construction experience INCLUDING one (1) year or more supervising a work crew AND one season or more of operating a snowplow with or without wings AND six (6) months or more of operating medium or heavy equipment, such as graders, rollers, and backhoes.
  • OR One (1) year or more as a Transportation Operations Technician III.
  • A Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
  • Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement is required within the first six months of employment.
  • An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.
  • An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within one (1) year or be enrolled.
  • An incumbent must complete First Aid and CPR certification training within one (1) year or be enrolled.
  • Non-original probationary employees must obtain a required CDL license prior to the completion of six (6) months of service in the position.
