About The Position

The Transportation Security Specialist - Explosives position at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) involves safeguarding the American transportation infrastructure by assessing and mitigating threats related to explosives. This role is critical in ensuring the safety of airports, seaports, railroads, highways, and public transit systems. The specialist will apply technical knowledge of explosives, educate screening personnel, and respond to potential explosive threats, thereby playing a vital role in national security.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National status.
  • Minimum entry age of 18 years at the time of application.
  • Completion of a favorable Background Investigation (BI).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret level security clearance.
  • Selective Service registration required.
  • Pass pre-employment Drug Screening and subject to post-employment random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Meet and maintain medical requirements as stated in TSA Medical Guidelines for Transportation Security Specialist - Explosives.
  • Availability to work various shifts and overtime as needed.
  • Willingness to undertake extensive travel, including overnight travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in bomb program management responsibilities.
  • Experience as a Bomb Appraisal Officer, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician, or similar position.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key component of a multi-layered security approach.
  • Apply experience and technical knowledge of explosives to assess threats.
  • Educate the screening workforce in the detection of threats.
  • Support explosive vulnerability assessments in all modes of transportation.
  • Respond to and assess unresolved checkpoint and checked baggage alarms involving possible explosives, IED components, or actual IEDs.
  • Assess interrelationships between initiators, power supplies, and chemicals to determine the nature of devices.
  • Deploy in support of risk mitigation efforts to deter, detect, and prevent the introduction of IEDs or other dangerous items into the airport environment.
  • Participate with evaluation teams in conducting covert drills to determine the effectiveness of training programs and identify potential security vulnerabilities.
  • Mentor and train the front line screening workforce to increase their operational knowledge of explosives and IED components.
