About The Position

Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of travelers across all transportation sectors. This position is located within the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). TSOs are responsible for providing security and protection for air travelers, airports, and aircraft in a courteous and professional manner. Their duties extend beyond just airport security; they may also be involved in securing high-profile events and important figures, ensuring that all aspects of transportation systems are safeguarded against potential threats. As a TSO, you will operate various screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo, and on passengers. This includes preventing prohibited items from being transported onto aircraft. The role requires performing searches and screenings, which may involve physical interaction with passengers, such as conducting pat-downs and searching property. TSOs must also control terminal entry and exit points, interact with the public by giving directions, and respond to inquiries. Maintaining focus and awareness in a high-stress environment is essential, as TSOs must be able to identify and locate potentially life-threatening devices while making effective decisions in both crisis and routine situations. Continuous development of critical thinking skills is necessary to mitigate actual and potential security threats. TSOs must be able to identify, evaluate, and apply appropriate situational options and approaches, which may include the application of risk-based security screening protocols. Adherence to all applicable Standard Operating Procedures is mandatory, and TSOs are expected to demonstrate responsible and dependable behavior while being open to change and adapting to new information or unexpected obstacles. The position may require wearing TSA-approved personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure the health and safety of employees, especially in frontline positions that involve regular contact with the traveling public.
