About the position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT) invites qualified agency employees to apply for the position of Transportation Safety Advisor 1. Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license. The Transportation Safety Advisor 1 will work alongside a small team of talented and dedicated safety professionals who provide technical expertise and guidance on a variety of occupational health and safety matters. This position will require extensive in-state travel, and the daily work schedule will vary in order to be at a CTDOT work location, garage, or job site to conduct training, inspections, investigations, or operational observations. It is also common that during emergency operations such as weather events, accidents, or other conditions that seriously affect the CTDOT operations, the Safety Advisor is required to work extended hours in adverse conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring compliance throughout the Department with all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), State and Department regulations, policies and procedures relating to workplace safety.
  • Having a fundamental understanding of occupational health and safety and risk management concepts.
  • Being familiarized with a wide variety of OSHA standards, regulations, and best practices for construction, general industry, motor vehicle, and Commercial Driver's License (CDL) operation and emergency response.
  • Inspects all field and shop operations for unsafe practices, conditions and health hazards.
  • Investigates all personal injury and motor vehicle accidents.
  • Conducts programs on truck and equipment operation, driver training, first aid, traffic control and other accident prevention procedures.
  • Inspects buildings, vehicles, equipment and tools to promote safety practices.
  • Participates in district safety committee meetings, fact finding hearings and preconstruction meetings.
  • Advises crew leaders, party chiefs and other supervisory personnel in planning and conducting safe work operations.
  • Updates statistics, prepares reports and makes recommendations on all investigations, inspections and other activities.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of experience in training and/or enforcement of employee safety regulations and safe working practices.
  • Possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with applicable state and federal health and safety related regulations such as OSHA, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, National Fire Protection Administration and building and life safety codes.
  • Experience in developing and/or delivering in-person trainings on various safety topics.
  • Experience investigating safety related issues.
  • Experience in equipment and process reviews and advising on hazards, safety procedures, personal protective equipment, training, or compliance.
  • Experience using various types of technology including computers, tablets, phones, metering and measuring instruments and a wide variety of complex computer software programs.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite including: PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams.
