About The Position

The position involves collaborating with the Transportation Routing Specialist to plan school bus routes for safety and efficiency for all eligible students across the county. The role requires inputting data into transportation routing software, specifically TripSpark’s VEO Transportation, to maintain a tiered school bus transportation system catering to approximately 24,000 students.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Associate degree preferred.
• Working knowledge and general understanding of the geography and roads within Charles County preferred.
• Outstanding communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently.
• Ability to utilize computer-assisted routing software and have a functional knowledge of common software products used in an office setting (word processing, spreadsheets, and databases).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel is required.

Responsibilities

• Implementation and ongoing operation of routing software (TripSpark VEO Transportation) for safe and efficient routing.
• Assists in all phases of the operation of a safe and efficient school transportation system, including routing of regular and special education route vehicles.
• Coordinates with Transportation Routing Specialist to determine and establish changes to bus stop locations, routes, and school vehicle loading zones.
• Assists in auditing school vehicle routes, maximizing school vehicle capacity, and creating and assigning school bus stop locations.
• Assigns students to appropriate school bus stops by establishing accurate ranges within the routing software.
• Maintains accurate documents, information, daycare address updates, and other records pertaining to student transportation.
• Maintains confidentiality regarding student addresses, bus assignments, special needs accommodations, and other departmental matters.
• Utilizes the school locator portal to publicize school eligibility and bus assignments.
• Prepares and distributes routes established with the Transportation Routing Specialist through the transportation database.
• Edits routing software map to reflect changes in county infrastructure.
• Coordinates with county officials to confirm road names and development status.
• Maintains a route update library each school year, recording changes made throughout the school year.
• Runs routing reports for the Transportation Routing Specialist regularly.
• Responds to inquiries and concerns regarding policies, procedures, and routing in a timely manner.
• Performs related work as required or assigned by the Director of Transportation or designee.
