About The Position

Position Purpose: Responsible for the daily field operation of scheduled bus services, and transit centers, performing accident investigations, Bus Operator performance reviews, and activities of Bus Operators. Develops and recommends forward-thinking systems, procedures, and goals.

Requirements

  • Expert knowledge of transit operations (e.g., principles, practices, rules, regulations, and routes of transit operations)
  • Solid knowledge of multiple equipment types, and safety practices and procedures related to transit vehicle operation and public safety
  • Solid communication skills to effectively interact with employees, the general public, and emergency response personnel
  • Excellent English communication skills both verbally and in carefully composed written documentation
  • Ability and willingness to communicate as effectively as possible with Spanish-speaking customers
  • Solid conflict resolution skills and ability to de-escalate and properly assist confused and/or angry customers
  • Solid ability to set work priorities, and direct, guide, and motivate the work of subordinates
  • Solid knowledge of the geography of the service area
  • Solid ability to effectively manage time and workload effectively, which includes prioritizing, organizing, and following through on a variety of tasks, assignments, and projects to meet deadlines with attention to detail
  • Solid ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Calmly handle emergency situations, so as to instill subordinates' confidence in incumbent's leadership capabilities
  • Solid knowledge of supervision principles/practices, and the ability to supervise the work of others

  • High school diploma or equivalent knowledge that allows the incumbent to successfully perform the job duties as outlined in this document.
  • Five (5) years of actual experience or a combination of formal training and experience in transit operations in a supervisory capacity is required.
  • Specialized training in public transit and a valid Class B Colorado Commercial Driver's License, with a P2 endorsement, are required.
  • Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training certification.
  • Alcohol Swab training certification.
  • ICS 100 (Incident Command System) training.
  • This list will be updated annually as FTA/DOT guidelines warrant.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, evaluates, coaches, and provides training and discipline for Bus Operators on a daily schedule. Additionally, assigned to supervise a team of Bus Operators as the team leader. Completes related daily activities (e.g., monitoring fitness for duty, answering operational questions from Operators, providing guidance, etc.).
  • Responsible for compiling, composing, and presenting employee performance evaluations in a professional and timely manner at routine intervals.
  • Responsible for developing and executing employee performance improvement plans for Bus Operators as necessary.
  • Assists in and coordinates the resolution of problems in the field such as breakdowns, bus exchanges, accidents, emergency response, detours, etc.; conducts field inspections as necessary.
  • Receives monitors and responds to radio calls from Dispatchers and Operators.
  • Investigates passenger complaints and accidents involving transit vehicles; assists Operators in preparing accident reports as well as mediating complaints between customers and drivers. Utilizes all tools available such as incident reports, witness statements, facility, and mobile video review. Completes supervisor portion of Accident Report, and decides of preventability for assigned accidents. Evaluates complaints, and recommend action up to and including dismissal.
  • Provides information to the public regarding transit operations. Accurately records investigation details and findings in transit management and CAD/AVL systems.
  • Prepares investigation findings and commentary in daily records and reports (e.g., personnel, monetary, daily absentee, and summary reports.); verifies reports submitted by Operators as necessary.
  • Assists Dispatch as needed to investigate issues related to Bus Operator shift coverage, shift exchanges, extra board, and show-up usage. Interfaces with Bus Operators related to payroll issues as necessary.
  • Provides information to other departments and agencies regarding route, traffic, and policy changes. Informs management & supervisors of problems relating to department activities, and either takes responsibility for or assists with problem resolution.
  • Responsible for the daily coordination of drivers and Information Clerks at customer service outlets. Coordinates, schedules, and provides auxiliary services to ensure efficient transport of individuals with disabilities as per ADA guidelines. Transports RFTA monies. Logs and stores lost and found articles. Assists in developing policy and procedure. Acts as the conduit for information and interface between team members and external departments.
  • Investigate, forecast, and coordinate safe and efficient detours and alterations in road operations. Works as in-field incident commander for emergency management and other critical field situations as assigned. Provides information to, coordinate with, and dispatch by Dispatchers to investigate and follow up with issues in the field.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
