About The Position

Gonzalez Companies is a partner managed firm that provides comprehensive Planning, Design, and Construction Management Services to large and small Water, Sewer and Utility Districts; Departments of Transportation; and municipalities. We are currently seeking a Transportation Engineer (III/IV) to help serve our connection of clients and community. The projected range of compensation in Illinois for this job is $80,000 - $95,000.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline; Master’s preferred for higher-level roles.
  • Typically 5–12+ years of experience in transportation or roadway engineering with demonstrated technical competency.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation/OpenRoads and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D, including advanced geometric design and plan development.
  • Strong understanding of DOT, LPA, or municipal design standards, processes, and submittal requirements.
  • Ability to produce, review, and refine engineering calculations, design packages, cost estimates, and technical documents.
  • PE license required; ability to serve as Engineer of Record or lead discipline tasks at the IV level.
  • Proven ability to mentor junior staff, coordinate tasks, manage portions of projects, and communicate effectively with clients and internal teams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to work independently on complex assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or contribute significantly to the design and delivery of transportation projects, including roadway geometrics, intersections, pedestrian facilities, drainage, and traffic control.
  • Develop and review engineering plans, models, and calculations using MicroStation/OpenRoads and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Prepare design reports, cost estimates, technical memos, specifications, and milestone submittals for DOT, LPA, or municipal agencies.
  • Oversee and guide junior engineers, providing mentorship, task coordination, and quality review of design documents.
  • Coordinate with project managers, clients, subconsultants, utilities, and permitting agencies to ensure project requirements and schedules are met.
  • Perform advanced engineering analyses, troubleshoot design challenges, and propose effective technical solutions.
  • Support or lead project planning, scope development, and discipline-level budgeting as experience allows.
  • Participate in QA/QC reviews and ensure compliance with relevant DOT, municipal, and industry standards.
  • Conduct occasional field investigations, site reviews, or construction support activities.
