About the position

AECOM is seeking a Transportation Planning Intern to join the transportation team in the Oakland, CA office. Internships are designed to introduce and build essential, hands-on skills that differ from those attained in the academic arena and help to enhance the transition from student to professional. While this position will primarily work with the Transit-Rail team, interns are assigned duties that will provide broad, well-rounded learning. This position could provide the opportunity for the intern to work on components of multi-modal transit planning, such as light rail, commuter rail, high-speed rail, bus rapid transit, and microtransit, among other transit-supportive studies. This position is expected to begin in May 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Supports planning studies and reports for new and updated plans and programs.
  • Collects a variety of statistical data and prepares reports and maps on topics, such as census information, land use, roadway network, crash records, and asset inventories.
  • Works with the planning team to conduct equitable public outreach, preparing materials and presentations.
  • Analyzes data and prepares detailed maps for use on thematic maps and in reports.
  • Conducts concept-level evaluation of transit/transportation improvement options.
  • Documents and presents findings on transit/transportation planning projects.
  • Researches current transportation-related topics at local, State, and Federal levels.
  • Assists with other duties assigned by senior staff and/or Project Managers.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Architecture, or Planning, Political Science, GIS, Data Analytics, Urban Studies with some coursework or work experience in transportation and must have completed at least one year of study.
  • Candidates who have recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the Master’s degree are eligible to apply for these positions.
  • Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.

Nice-to-haves

  • Currently pursuing a master’s degree in urban planning, Transportation Planning, or City and Regional Planning with an undergraduate degree in Planning, Political Science, GIS, Data Analytics, Urban Studies, Engineering, Architecture, or Sociology.
  • Previous internship experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
