About The Position

The Transportation Planner position is responsible for leading various transportation initiatives and capital improvement projects within the City of Minneapolis. This role involves managing citywide and regional transportation projects, collaborating with regional agencies, and ensuring alignment with the City's policies, including the Complete Streets Policy and Vision Zero commitment. The position also focuses on implementing the vision outlined in the City's Capital Improvement Program and Transportation Action Plan, while promoting racial equity in transportation planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Planning, Engineering, Urban Design, or a related field; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Five years of experience in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning and Design, land use planning, and project management.
  • Knowledge of transportation demand and patronage forecasting.

Nice To Haves

  • American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP) certification preferred.
  • Professional Transportation Planner (PTP) certification preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage short and long term transportation issues to improve the transportation system.
  • Assist in efforts related to regional and citywide transportation projects as assigned.
  • Partner with regional agencies (MnDOT, Hennepin County, Metro Transit) on plans and projects that advance citywide transportation goals.
  • Manage the delivery of capital improvement projects, including pedestrian safety improvements and protected bikeways.
  • Maintain knowledge of design standards, best practices, and innovative design concepts.
  • Oversee, negotiate, draft, manage, and administer contracts and schedules with consultants and contractors.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with City staff and regional partners.
  • Communicate with City Council, residents, businesses, and community groups regarding projects.
  • Assist with planning and developing the City's capital improvement program.
  • Provide liaison work with the City's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committees.
  • Complete other assigned projects and provide work direction to Associate Transportation Planners.
