About The Position

This position will support Tempe's multi-modal transit network including fixed-route bus, neighborhood circulators, light rail, streetcar and paratransit services. This position will also support capital planning and project management related to transit infrastructure projects and facilities. This position plans, organizes, and manages transportation and transit planning projects. Conducts plan reviews and inspections for commercial, residential, and sign projects. Manages large transportation and transit planning and infrastructure projects, oversees budgets, and handles direct communication with City leaders, commissions, and the public to advance long-term strategic goals.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of experience in public administration, transportation/transit/traffic/urban planning, architecture, civil/traffic engineering, and/or construction management or related experience including one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicant's full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Planning, Architecture, Engineering, Sustainability, Geography, Social Sciences, or related field.
  • Applicants considered for this job classification must pass the following: Criminal history review

Responsibilities

  • Develops, recommends, and implements mid and long-term strategies and plans for future growth of transportation and transit planning programs, services, and facilities. Develops and administers the transportation planning budget, transit facilities budget, or other budgets related to the assigned division.
  • Manages, directs, oversees, and organizes divisional programs including capital infrastructure projects, long-range planning, and on-going programs.
  • Provides technical expertise and design related direction and advice to other planners, engineers, consultants or professional staff.
  • Supervises the work of assigned personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Monitors and ensures program compliance with pertinent City, county, state, federal laws, rules, regulations, and standards.
  • Represents Tempe at various local, federal and regional partner meetings. Prepares memos, reports, and presentations to accomplish the objectives of transportation projects for public meetings, commissions, and council meetings.
  • Responds to inquiries/complaints and recommends corrective action as necessary.
  • May perform responsibilities of a similar nature and level as assigned.
