About The Position

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician II. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, and ditching. In the winter months, this position will also assist with plowing and salting, and overtime may be required. Additionally, this position may assist in vehicle and equipment maintenance. This position is eligible for a sign-on and retention bonus of up to $2000 for newly hired CDL and non-CDL holders who are hired into permanent maintenance worker or mechanic job on or after July 13, 2025. New hires are typically made at the salary range minimum.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor INCLUDING EITHER one season of operating a snowplow with wings OR six (6) months of operating medium or heavy equipment, such as graders, excavators, and backhoes
  • OR Upon successful completion of original probation as a Transportation Operations Technician I AND possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement
  • A Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required
  • Must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation
  • Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement is required within the first six months of employment
  • Must complete all VTTC required coursework within one (1) year or be enrolled
  • Non-original probationary employees must obtain a required CDL license prior to the completion of six (6) months of service in the position
  • Provide detailed employment information for the past 10 years for any commercial motor vehicle operator roles, including names and addresses of previous employers, dates of employment, and reason for leaving
  • Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required
  • Considerable overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment
