About The Position

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Requirements

  • No education required.
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech I = No experience required
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech II = 1 year experience
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech III = 2 years experience
  • Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech I Must have or obtain Commercial Class "A" CDL with "N" Tank Endorsement within 120 days from date of employment.
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech II and III Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License. Must have or obtain an "N" Endorsement within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate (To be given at time of hire)
  • US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 120 days of employment.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • A mathematical simulation will be part of the interview process

Responsibilities

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yard or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI
  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Inspects and processes damage claims
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine
  • Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications
