About The Position

The Transportation Maintenance Supervisor supervises field crews and participates in activities related to transportation field maintenance, repair and construction activities. Supervision may extend to multiple work sites within a defined geographical area or may be site specific. This classification differs from the Public Works Crew Supervisor in the scope and complexity of projects assigned.

Requirements

  • Five years of experience in commercial, industrial or public works maintenance, repair or construction activities and the operation of heavy equipment INCLUDING one year of lead or supervisory experience. (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)
  • One year of experience with Pima County as a Public Works Crew Supervisor or in another closely related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.
  • Three years of experience with Pima County as a Transportation Maintenance Specialist II or in another closely-related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application.
  • Some positions may require a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements at time of appointment or prior to end of initial probation.
  • Some positions may require an OSHA 40-hour Hazardous Materials training, Work Zone Traffic Control training, or specialized roadway safety certifications within the probationary period.
  • Some positions require an ADEQ collections system operator grade 4 certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum four (4) years experience as a lead or supervisory in public works related roadway maintenance.
  • Minimum four (4) years experience using Pima County asset management software.
  • Minimum four (4) years experience facilitating and assisting with personnel matters (FMLA, progressive discipline, and employee plans/appraisals).
  • Minimum four (4) years experience effectively scheduling work crews, equipment, and/or materials for the efficient delivery of services related to roadway maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, and assigns work to field crews engaged in field transportation maintenance, repair and construction activities of public works infrastructure and actively participates in the execution of tasks alongside assigned field crews
  • Monitors public works field maintenance and construction activities including productivity, safety practices, quality control and reviews equipment utilization logs of assigned multiple work crews
  • Coordinates field crew and equipment assignments with other supervisors, and contract construction agencies to assure availability of resources and to avoid work stoppages
  • Monitors and manages costs and expenditures (equipment usage, materials, and workforce hours) for maintenance work orders
  • Operates and performs operator-level maintenance and servicing of assigned general, heavy and special equipment, e.g., pressure cleaner, dozers, scrapers, water truck, grader, front end loader, jackhammer, tractor trailer and pickup trucks
  • Establishes or directs establishment and maintenance of work site traffic control measures to assure safety of workers and the public
  • Assigns and direct work of public work crews through use of computer systems and crew assigned tablets
  • Responds to and resolves complaints or inquiries from the public relative to public works transportation operations, construction, repair or maintenance activity
  • Reviews, interprets and works from blueprints, schematics, field engineering and design notes, surveys, plots and related technical documents to ensure compliance with agency/industry standards
  • Provides immediate response and operational leadership during field emergency response and critical incident response, including roadway blockages, flooding, collisions, hazardous spills, downed trees, severe weather (snow/ice), or other hazards
  • May act as Public Works Manager I in their absence.
