About The Position

The Pima County Department of Transportation is seeking two skilled and motivated Transportation Maintenance Specialists to join our Pavement Marking team! These positions are responsible for installing, maintaining, and removing pavement markings on public roadways, while assisting crew supervisors with leading these operational activities. This recruitment will fill two Transportation Maintenance Specialist II positions: one for the long line crew for continuous roadway striping operations, and one for the short line (transverse) crew for crosswalks, stop bars, symbols, and specialty markings. The work schedule is four, ten-hour shifts, Monday-Thursday, 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM. These positions require a valid Arizona class A or B commercial driver's license (CDL) at the time of appointment or prior to completion of the initial/promotional probation period.

Requirements

  • Six years of journey-level advanced or expert level work experience in transportation-related construction and/or maintenance activities; OR: Three years of experience with Pima County as a Transportation Maintenance Specialist I or closely related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • Some positions may require possession of a valid Arizona Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s) at the time of appointment or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period.
  • Positions requiring a CDL are also subject to applicable State of Arizona and federal standards, rules, and regulations on physical requirements including drug and alcohol testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience applying pavement markings along roadway segments and at intersections using specialized equipment, machinery, and vehicles.
  • Experience leading or supporting supervisory efforts to oversee, plan, schedule, and coordinate daily work operations.
  • Experience reading and interpreting pavement marking plans, including standard layout for lanes, crosswalks, legends, and stop bars.
  • Experience setting up and removing temporary traffic control, including proper placement of cones, signs, and channelizing devices.
  • Experience with/knowledge of federal, state and local regulations and guidelines for pavement marking applications, such as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Experience collecting field data and utilizing asset management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and/or participates in advanced or expert level duties to maintain and construct transportation infrastructure
  • Performs operational and preventive maintenance reviews of transportation infrastructure
  • Interprets and applies required codes or standards to work situations
  • Interprets complex blueprints, schematics and diagrams to facilitate work
  • Recommends to engineering, support staff and management, modifications to current infrastructure and systems to enhance operability, reliability and/or compliance with industrial or governmental standards or to enhance and protect transportation infrastructure
  • Acts as work center shift supervisor in the absence of the Transportation Maintenance Supervisor
  • Coordinates transportation infrastructure maintenance or construction with operations and maintenance staff, supported facility managers or end-users to assure minimal disruption of services
  • Conducts or coordinates specialized training for transportation maintenance staff in the systems being supported
  • Maintains comprehensive records of work performed, modifications to equipment or systems, and related operations logs
  • Prepares periodic and special reports for management on equipment, systems and/or facilities supported or maintained.
