About The Position

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT), invites its experienced agency employees to apply for the position of Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Bridge Maintenance) located in the Darien Bridge Maintenance facility. This position is responsible for overseeing and assigning daily duties to a crew of various Transportation Maintainers in the repair and maintenance operations of various statewide infrastructure, and have the ability to make on-site adjustments to projects as deemed necessary.

Requirements

  • Candidates must indicate they hold a current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank endorsement in the "Licenses and Professional Certifications" section of the application, or they will not be considered.
  • Candidates invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, reflecting the tank endorsement, a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC), and copies of their last two performance appraisals, at time of interview, or they will be immediately disqualified.
  • Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed; to include mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Various storm events will require employees to stay at work for the duration of the storm, which at times could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends.
  • Incumbents in this class will be required to have a 30-mile residency from the posted job location.
  • Candidates must show how they meet the required knowledge and experience on their application to proceed further in the hiring process.
  • Candidates will be required to bring a copy of their Master Application at the time of interview.
  • Must be trained and have the ability to wear a Harness and possess fall protection training.
  • Must be in compliance with the Department's Lead Health and Safety and Silica Safety Programs; (respirator physical, a current respirator fit test).
  • Two (2) years of skilled experience in the maintenance and repair of bridges and structures.
  • Knowledge of materials, equipment and approved methods in the maintenance and repair of movable and stationary bridges
  • Skills interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; in the operation of related equipment
  • Ability to utilize computer software
  • Supervisory ability
  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Bridge Maintenance operations including carpentry, masonry, structural repairs, and working with heights
  • Experience leading and providing direction to a work crew.
  • Experience in an acting capacity as a Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Bridge).
  • Experience with the Department's Bridge Repair Units (BRU) and Construction Contracts, and contract interpretation.
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and design plans.
  • Experience with Microsoft Computer applications including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.

  • May make recommendations on policies or standards
  • May prepare reports and correspondence
  • May do preliminary site inspection of assigned jobs
  • May be required to stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at State-owned airports
  • Performs related duties as required
