About The Position

Incumbent will work as a member and leader of the Transportation crew. The primary responsibility of the Lead is assisting in the scheduling of road maintenance and repair of the 1500 miles of roads, streets, and trails on the Yakama Reservation. The incumbent will also assist the crew with road maintenance and repair. Incumbent will assist and work in a cooperative effort with the Transportation Supervisor and/or Transportation Superintendent for completing projects under the overall responsibility of the Transportation Program. Examples of Work Performed: Transportation Lead will need to be able to assist, communicate, and lead a Transportation crew to ensure projects are completed from beginning to end. There are instances of multiple projects that occur simultaneously across the Yakama Nation that must be completed in a timely manner. Types of work performed gravel and grading of all Yakama Nation roads, cemeteries, and driveways snow removal of all roads, bus stops. Agency complex replacing catch basin filters and sweeping of all Yakama Nation streets and housing projects; dust abatements projects; installing new parking areas; replacing delineators; and other Transportation projects as they arise, and this list is not all inclusive and is subject to change due to the nature and need of projects requested and/or required for completion. Transportation Lead will act as main supervisor in the absence of the Transportation Superintendent and Transportation Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment such as: water trucks, dozers, loaders, road graders, belly dumps, 18-wheel tractor-trailer, linear crusher, excavator, snow plows, etc.
  • Knowledge of standard maintenance requirements and practices for heavy machinery and equipment.
  • Knowledge of methods and materials used in general road construction and road maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of established procedures, methods, and techniques for the proper maintenance and repair of roads, streets, trails, bridges, minor drainage structures, and related appurtenances.
  • Knowledge of the Tribal System of roads, streets, trails, cemeteries on the Yakama Reservation.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules relating to heavy equipment and machinery operations.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices associated with use of heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments and projects.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects over a large geographic area.
  • Ability to read and understand maps, sketches, specifications, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of tasks for extended periods in various weather conditions, including sunny and hot weather, and cold and/or wet weather.
  • Ability to work independently and productively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate a computer, smartphones, and software programs: Microsoft word, Excel, and E-mail.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of experience in operating heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of roads, streets, trails, and related appurtenances, as a Heavy Equipment Operator II or in a supervisory position dealing with the same type of experience.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with a Class A Commercial Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
  • Must maintain physical condition as appropriate to perform assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • May sometimes be required to work flexible hours and overtime, including weekends and holidays.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

Nice To Haves

  • Vocational and/or Technical school certification in heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
