About The Position

Under minimal supervision, perform inspection work on complex road and bridge construction projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and special provisions. During course of regular duties, provide training in all phases of construction for fellow employees. Manages all assigned construction projects and monitors for compliance with plans, specifications and standards. Ensures construction inspection and sampling and testing requirements are met or exceeded by qualified inspectors and that work is in accordance with environmental regulations and permits. Assists RCE in resolving construction conflicts and deficiencies to keep assigned projects on time and on budget. Provide oversight, guidance and technical assistance to SCDOT and consultant inspection personnel. Performs inspection duties on complex road and bridge construction projects as a certified CEPSCI and SCDOT inspector, as needed. Duties include inspection of all aspects of any assigned project, including all specialized areas and all phases of construction. Perform surveying duties. Be fluent in the operation of the level, Total Station, GPS and data collector. Compute complex grades and stake horizontal and vertical alignments for roadway and bridges, interchanges, drainage structures and other related items. Ensure that field notes are kept in an orderly manner on all work so that others may understand what has been accomplished. Samples construction materials as certified SCDOT inspector, inputs sample data in SiteManager/AWP and submits to Materials Laboratory for testing. Performs field tests as appropriate as certified SCDOT inspector. Prepare and maintain all forms, checklists and spreadsheets associated with the work inspected. Perform traffic control inspections and wage rate interviews as required for projects. Ensure that construction projects are safe for the Contractor, SCDOT personnel and the traveling public. Serve as the Department representative when dealing with contractors, the general public, property owners, utility company representatives, etc. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and four and one-half (4.5) years of progressively responsible engineering technician related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience.
  • A motor vehicle operator's license is required.
