By joining our Division of Highway Design/Drainage Branch, as a Transportation Engineer II in Franklin County, you’ll have the opportunity to learn QA/QC processes and KYTC drainage standards firsthand, gain hands-on experience with ORD drainage and stormwater design, collaborate with experienced engineers, develop the skills to identify and correct design issues, and grow your expertise while contributing to safer, more resilient roadway infrastructure across KY.

Requirements

  • Must have two years of engineering experience in addition to that required for licensure as a professional engineer.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this job classification.
  • Must be licensed as a professional engineer by the Kentucky Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors OR must be licensed in another state with the ability to obtain a Professional Engineering license from Kentucky Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors within the employee's initial six month probationary period.
  • Engineering decisions recommended by individuals without a Kentucky Professional Engineering License must be approved by a KRS Chapter 322 Licensed Professional Engineer until licensure is obtained.
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification.

  • Reviewing engineering plans, calculations, and documentation
  • Using drainage design and modeling software such as OpenRoads Designer (ORD), HY-8, or HEC-RAS
  • QA/QC reviews of drainage and stormwater designs
  • Mentoring or guiding EITs or interns
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to support project delivery

Responsibilities

  • Lead QA/QC reviews of drainage and stormwater designs to ensure compliance with KYTC standards and regulatory requirements
  • Develop, review, and validate ORD drainage models to support accurate and reliable project designs
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to EITs and junior staff, supporting their technical growth and understanding of QA/QC processes
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including roadway, environmental, and consultant staff, to ensure seamless project delivery
  • Contribute to process improvements, develop ORD methods, updates to branch procedures, and best practices to maintain high standards and efficiency
