About The Position

Transportation Engineer I: Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Transportation Engineer II: Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • Transportation Engineer I: 4 years experience in engineering, transportation engineering, or engineering-related (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Transportation Engineer II: 5 years experience in engineering, transportation engineering, or engineering-related (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Safety Impact Certificate
  • Licensed Prof Engineer
  • Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals
  • Pavement design and management processes and procedures.
  • Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements
  • Contract development and oversight
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development, preparation and letting of maintenance contracts for the district.
  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • Performs and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.
  • Performs engineering analysis of statewide pavement conditions and develops reports on pavement conditions.
  • Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
  • Provides assistance in preparing reports on pavement conditions.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Coordinates with Area Engineers and reviews area office contract submissions.
  • Trains engineering staff.
  • Analyzes and recommends approval for modifications to highway maintenance contracts.
