About The Position

The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Geotechnical Services (GS) is looking to hire a Transportation Engineer Civil (TE Civil) in the Office of Geotechnical Design South (OGDS). Under the direction of a Senior Transportation Engineer or Senior Engineering Geologist, the incumbent will provide technical expertise, support, and recommendations on geotechnical topics as they evolve, starting with the project planning phase and progressing through the design, construction, and operation phases of the State Transportation System. Periodic travel to the Districts and field sites for periods of several days to weeks may be required. The TE Civil will conduct geotechnical studies including site exploration, direction of laboratory testing, analysis, and preparation of reports, presenting recommendations, designs, and specifications including consideration of constructibility. These studies include and are not limited to the areas of expansive soils, mechanically stabilized walls and embankments, tieback retaining walls, geotechnical earthquake engineering including earthquake response, settlement and stability of embankments, stability of earth and rock slopes, soil nail walls, and design of structure foundations (shallow and deep). Incumbents should have thorough knowledge of soil mechanics principles; soil behavior under various stress paths and stress conditions; laboratory and field soil and rock testing methods and procedures; site exploration and sampling techniques and equipment; and geotechnical field instrumentation methods and practices. This knowledge is as normally acquired in graduate level course work in geotechnical engineering. Requirements

  • Incumbents should have thorough knowledge of soil mechanics principles; soil behavior under various stress paths and stress conditions; laboratory and field soil and rock testing methods and procedures; site exploration and sampling techniques and equipment; and geotechnical field instrumentation methods and practices.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. Failure to submit a Statement of Qualifications will disqualify candidates from the hiring process.
  • The SOQ serves as documentation of each candidate's ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. The SOQ must include education, training, and experience that qualify the candidate for this position. The SOQ should be no more than 2 pages, single-spaced in 12-point font.
