About The Position

Under direction of the Area Senior Construction Engineer (a Senior Transportation Engineer), incumbent will perform a wide variety of difficult and complex transportation engineering work. Serves as the licensed professional resident engineer on construction projects. Will assign work, give instructions, make decisions on difficult engineering and administrative problems in connection with directing work on various transportation projects.

Requirements

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam.
For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.
Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification.
If you meet MQs under Pattern II and require the TE Civil in-person written hurdle exam, DO NOT TAKE the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle. Candidates who take the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle may negatively impact their hiring eligibility.
The position(s) require(s) a(n) Professional Civil Engineering License. You will be required to provide a copy of your license prior to being hired.
Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required.
Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If you are basing your eligibility on education, you must include your unofficial transcript(s)/diploma for verification. Unofficial, original, or official sealed transcripts will be accepted and may be required upon appointment. Applicants with foreign transcripts/degrees must provide a transcript/degree U.S. equivalency report evaluation that indicates the number of units and degree to which the foreign coursework is equivalent.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP); Cal/OSHA safety regulations; methods, materials, tools and equipment used in highway and bridge construction
Knowledge of the various influences of transportation facilities and systems on the environment
Testing of materials; principles and practices used in utility relocation; scheduling; critical path method (CPM) scheduling; and safety practices
Knowledge of contract administration paperwork and documentation
Analytical skill to determine if construction work meets specification requirements and to interpret plans and specifications correctly
Work under considerable independence and make judgment calls as to when issues, problems, or contract clarifications needs to be elevated to the Construction Engineer
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Able to concentrate, formulate effective strategies, be multi-tasked, adapt to changes in priorities, and complete complex task or projects with short notice
Ability to resolve emotionally charged issues reasonably and diplomatically
Ability to evaluate work methods and traffic conditions closely, both before and during the work, to assure safety
