About The Position

This position is responsible to carry out daily tasks for the Department of Transportation Engineering and Operations Division. The primary responsibilities require the troubleshoot and repair of electrical and electronic problems. Manage work orders in CityWorks as well as locate the City’s fiber/copper infrastructure.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Driver License
  • One (1) year of direct experience involving: underground utility - locates ; installation, maintenance, and repair .
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools , and standard practices for the installation, operation , and maintenance of traffic signal equipment and supporting systems
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, materials , and equipment used in locating underground utilities
  • Ability to use specialized equipment (i.e., bucket truck, hydraulic drills, chain jacks, strap jacks, lashing machines, air compressor, core drill, bucket buddy , volt meter , voltage tester, soldering irons, heat guns) and hand tools used in traffic operations .
  • Ability to work as part of a dynamic Traffic Signals team
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in electronics and electrical repair work
  • Skilled in electrical work involving the maintenance and installation of overhead traffic signals, wires, control cables, and pedestrian signals.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, sometimes under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in electrical work
  • Ability to diagnose , troubleshoot, and repair malfunctions in traffic signal equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret typical wiring diagrams , signal pla ns , City map s, or other traffic signal device related files or documents.
  • Knowledge on the MUTCD and Nationals Electrical Manufacture’s Association and National Electric Code standards for signal equipment
  • Technological & Computer Skills – computer and typing knowledge; including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, examples include: Outlook, Excel, and Word (or comparable programs, with the ability to learn Microsoft within the first year of hire) .
  • Has capacity to learn and is familiar with computer programs for work & access management, and training, including but not limited to: Kronos, PeopleSoft, Cityworks , MySuccess , etc.
  • Organization - ability to maintain accurate and organized records or files in a way that can be effectively accessed and remain confidential if necessary; organize and reconcile data; prepare corresponding reports and understand data; ability to follow through with self-audit of work to ensure accuracy.
  • Customer Service – Knowledge of the principles and processes for providing customer service, meeting quality standards, and evaluating customer satisfaction.
  • Professionalism – Ability to exhibit professional behavior always; interact regularly and professionally with departmental and divisional personnel, other City department staff, and citizens, as required . Includes adherence to City Code of Ethics, Guiding Principles, and other established measures.
  • Communication – Ability to convey information effectively through speaking and writing; understanding information received from others . Knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation and business mathematics .

  • Problem Sensitivity - The ability to assess when something is wrong, or likely to go wrong; recognizing there is a problem that needs a solution.
  • Time Management – The ability to manage time effectively to meet varying deadlines of multiple tasks.
  • Considerable knowledge of the City/Department of Transportation regulations, procedures or the ability to acquire within first year of hire.
  • Building & Construction – Knowledge of the materials and tools involved in the construction and repair of traffic control devices such as signs, signals, and pavement markings in relation to highways and roads . The knowledge of the equipment and materials used in all areas of Engineering & Operations work.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of direct experience involving: underground utility - locates ; installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Experience with work hazards, safety precautions, and OSHA regulations, including but not limited to overhead work, live 120-volt circuits .
  • IMSA Signals Level I or higher Certification, or ability to obtain within one year from the date of hire .
  • Ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 12 months of hire .
  • Computer experience preferred , including but not limited to typing, Word documents, spreadsheets, and work order management system.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge and abilities to perform work.

Responsibilities

  • Install , maintain , troubleshoot, and repair equipment within the City’s network of traffic control devices
  • Maintain work records including maintenance forms, inventory logs , vehicle inspection forms, daily work logs , and other documentation.
  • Locate, identify , and mark CDOT copper or fiber optic cable
  • Ensure compliance with NC (811) o ne-call Center
  • Sets up temporary traffic control, safety cones , and signs according to the CDOT WATCH handbook, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) , and specialized training.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following procedures, utilizing personal protective equipment, recognizing and reporting unsafe conditions and actions.
  • Load and unload materials, supplies, and equipment
  • Works on a 24-hour-a-day “on-call” rotation system.
  • Respond to emergency call s to signal devices and sign emergencies . Act as the first point of contact for all after-hours emergency calls and make decisions on how to resolve issues and take appropriate action within the established guidelines.
  • Assist with training as needed
  • Perform related work as assigned.
