About The Position

Serves as lead technician. Performs a variety of highly technical activities related to inspection on highway construction projects, hot mix plants and concrete plants. Inspects and documents the most complex contract items. Assists the project supervisor in the review of construction submittals and documentation. Provide direction, coaching and mentoring to lower level inspectors. Assists project supervisor in scheduling, monitoring and mentoring inspection staff. Serves as a primary contact for contractors, consultants and ADOT employees on minor construction projects or segments of major construction projects.

  • Valid Drivers License - This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
  • Must acquire ACI & ATTI certifications within 12 months of hire.
  • Must complete ATSSA technician certification training within 12 months of hire.
  • All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Nice To Haves

  • Four years experience or two years journey level experience in inspection of highway construction, hot mix and concrete plans or performing administrative or advanced engineering and construction records maintenance and related duties.
  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering or closely related curriculum may be substituted for the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect construction activities and contract items to ensure compliance with ADOT standard specifications, standard drawings and project specific special provision and plans, as well as applicable Federal laws, rules and policies and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality requirements. Use a State vehicle in the course of these duties.
  • Prepares field documentation and verifies field calculations for input to the PEN and FAST systems. Review technical problems and develop procedures and recommendations for resolution of issues related to assignment. Perform complex analysis and calculations. Review laboratory tests, material spread rates, quantities and other contract related documents.
  • Consult with contractors and other agency personnel to resolve construction related issues. Escalates issues as necessary. Stays current on all required certifications and training. Provides coaching and guidance to other employees. Reviews work of lower level inspectors within the area of assignment.
