About The Position

Serves as a construction technician, under the general supervision of a resident engineer, resident landscape architect, project supervisor or lab supervisor performing a variety of skilled and technical activities on highway construction projects. These activities will include LPA roadway, highway, electrical and landscape construction inspection, area lab materials quality control, field office materials sampling/testing coordination and assist with construction administration. Inspects, tests and documents complex construction items, such as highways, FMS, lighting, landscaping and irrigation, materials testing and construction administration. Primary contact for contractors, consultants and ADOT employees on minor projects or segments of a major project. Resolve issues of conflict with contractors. Documents change orders or force account work. Reviews completed work of other employees and provides field training to other employees when requested. Will normally be assigned to more than one area of construction and can be subject to irregular work hours. Overtime may be required including working nights, weekends and holidays. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary. Employment contingent upon passing a physical examination. Review construction plans, specifications, and documentation to ensure compliance with federal, state and local requirements. Reviews technical problems and develops procedures and recommendations for resolution of issues. Review, verify and approve calculations, test results and documentation. Review and verify contractor pay quantities before downloading into contractor pay estimate. Review and/or prepare contract documents related to supplemental agreements and financial documentation for completed projects. Perform inspection, documentation and testing for construction projects. Prepare project related documentation to ensure conformance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations and standards. Provide training, coaching and guidance to employees. Consult with contractors, local agencies and citizens to develop solutions to resolve issues at the lowest level in the field. prepare recommendations for project management.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of civil engineering, landscape and irrigation construction related to the construction of state highway system roadways.
  • Knowledge of construction inspection methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of construction materials testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of verification and review of procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of project related contract, plans, standards, policies, and procedures applicable to the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of Federal, state and agency standards, policies and practices.
  • Knowledge of approved record-keeping and documentation procedures.
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used for highway construction and materials testing purposes.
  • Skill in scheduling and tracking work activities.
  • Skill in analysis and preparation of data.
  • Skill in written and verbal communication in fluent English.
  • Skill in operation of equipment for completion of assigned duties.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of construction quality control equipment.
  • Ability to ensure that materials, equipment, and procedures used comply with agency standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret a variety of construction documents, including highway maps, construction plans and standard specifications.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, analyze, and perform multiple tasks and inspections.
  • Ability to establish and maintain work relationships.
  • Ability to complete assignments to acceptable standards in a timely manner.
  • Ability to safely drive a full-size pickup truck on- and off-road.
  • Ability to ensure safe completion of all work.
  • Ability to work outdoors for an extended time, exposed to heat, cold, dust, and noise, near high speed traffic.
  • Possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license.
  • Complete all required training for operating a motor vehicle on State business.
  • Successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks.
  • Maintain acceptable driving records.
  • Maintain the statutorily required liability insurance if operating a personally owned vehicle on state business.
  • Valid AZ State Driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass and become both ACI Concrete Field Technician Grade 1 and ATTI Field Technician Level 1 certified within 6 months of being hired.
  • Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
  • Pass a physical examination.

  • ACI Concrete Field Technician Grade 1 and ATTI Field Technician Level 1 Certification.
  • 2 years of combined journey-level experience as a senior-level technician, survey party chief, construction lead who reads plans & specifications, highway construction projects, hot mix & concrete plants, landscape & irrigation, or performing administrative or advanced engineering & construction records maintenance and related duties, performing construction.
