About The Position

The position involves driving a school bus and ensuring the safety and discipline of students during transportation. The driver will follow assigned routes, adhere to schedules, and maintain the bus in good working condition. Responsibilities include supervising students, communicating with parents and teachers, and completing necessary reports and inspections.

Requirements

  • Valid Texas commercial driver's license Class B with 'P' Passenger and 'S' School Bus endorsements.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Ability to pass alcohol and drug test.
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of student discipline procedure.
  • Ability to manage student behavior.
  • Ability to drive a school bus route and operate a bus, as assigned.
  • Good attendance record.

Responsibilities

  • Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  • Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation, completing pre- and post-route inspection(s) and notify mechanics of needed repairs via work order(s).
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.
  • Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
  • Keep assigned bus (regular or spare) clean and fueled.
  • Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on the bus.
  • Maintain discipline. Report student discipline problems to transportation administration via student safety reports.
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate seating charts and student rider rosters.
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, and reflector.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
  • Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
  • Operate cell phone and/or two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office only when bus is completely stopped and pulled over off of the roadway.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
  • Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification, including CPR/First Aid.
  • The Transportation Department may assign driver a spare bus, rather than the regularly assigned bus, at their discretion when necessary to ensure proper management of the entire transportation system.
  • Other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
