About The Position

This is a part-time, temporary position with no benefits. This position is grant-funded. DEFINITION: This specialized driver is responsible for driving Norfolk Public Schools students who qualify for McKinney Vento to ensure students can attend school regularly and receive a quality education. The position supports the Department of Early Learning and Title I with the movement of materials and other needs such as food and supply deliveries to families. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Operates a van (or similar vehicle) to provide safe transportation for students to and from school and other activities. Drives van along designated routes. Picks up and drops off students as scheduled. Ensures that the vehicle can be operated safely before driving and conducts pre-trip safety inspection, including observing visual defects and checking operating systems including brakes, horn, lights, emergency flashers, etc. Performs post-trip inspections of the vehicle. Ensures that all passengers have been dropped off and that no personal belongings have been left behind. Cleans vehicle as needed. Follows guidelines from the Department of Transportation on conduct and behavior. Ensures the vehicle is available for all scheduled maintenance and inspections. Reports any accidents immediately and completes necessary paperwork. Obeys all traffic laws and transportation practices as outlined in the Transportation Employee Handbook, School Board Policy, and local ordinances. Other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Current, unrestricted Virginia Driver's License
  • Successful completion of auxiliary driver and bus attendant training course (training provided)
  • Excellent driving record (at least + driving points)
  • Minimum age of 21 at the time of employment and 3 years of driving experience.
