About The Position

The Transportation Assistant is responsible for planning, coordinating, and controlling the shipment of material and equipment. This includes preparing shipment documentation for various materials, including hazardous materials, and providing advice and assistance to customers regarding transportation and distribution functions. The role involves resolving problems, preparing reports, and tracing shipments upon request. The assistant will also provide traffic management support by selecting and procuring safe and effective carrier services at the least cost to the government. Additionally, the position requires determining efficient rates and routes for domestic and export shipments, classifying and routing a wide range of commodities, and performing day-to-day functions related to invoice verification and payment. The work environment includes both office and warehouse settings, with some physical demands such as lifting and moving materials.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Set Schedule for Tour of Duty.
  • Security Requirements: Non-Critical Sensitive with Secret Access.
  • Appointment is subject to a favorable suitability or fitness determination.
  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): Non-Exempt.
  • Selective Service Requirement: Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered or exempt.
  • Recruitment Incentives: Not Authorized.
  • Bargaining Unit Status: Yes.
  • Pre-Employment Physical: Required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required hazardous materials handling certifications.
  • Subject to Overseas Rotation Agreement, Tour Length: Yes/36 Months.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain licenses and/or certifications required by installation, federal, state, and local laws.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in federal service or equivalent in military/private sector.
  • Experience in determining efficient economical rates and routes for shipments.
  • Experience in classifying, rating, routing, and moving hazardous materials.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates and controls shipment of material and equipment.
  • Prepares shipment documentation for material and equipment shipped, including hazardous materials.
  • Provides advice and assistance to customers concerning all aspects of DLA Distribution Depot transportation and distribution functions.
  • Provides status updates, resolves problems, prepares reports, and traces shipments upon request.
  • Provides traffic management support through selection, approval, procurement, and use of safe and effective carrier services at the least cost to the government.
  • Determines the most efficient economical rates and routes to destination for domestic inbound and export shipments.
  • Responsible for the classification, rating, routing, and movement of a wide range of commodities, including hazardous materials.
  • Plans shipping dates, material pick up, and loading times for equipment and material to be shipped from DLA Distribution Depot.
  • Performs verification and payment of invoices utilizing various automated systems.
  • Computes and verifies transportation costs and contacts carriers for rates when required.
  • Determines economical routing based on technical review of guides and tariffs.
  • Reviews automated documentation for all types of shipments and corrects any invalid, void, or missing information.
