About The Position

The Transportation Assistant position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves managing transportation claims and providing guidance to customers regarding their entitlements and procedures. The role requires the use of automated systems to resolve issues and track data trends, ensuring efficient handling of claims related to the movement and storage of personal property.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience which includes providing guidance to customers on filing transportation claims, utilizing automated systems to resolve customer issues, and verifying services performed in accordance with contract specifications.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate valid state driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Government vehicle operation certificate within 30 days of employment.
  • A qualified typist (at least 40 words per minute with 3 or fewer errors) is required.

Responsibilities

  • Develops briefings at program level, tracks data/claims trends, improvements, and claims resolutions to identify areas of potential improvements and best practices.
  • Utilizes various claims and transportation automated systems in order to resolve issues and answer claimants questions.
  • Investigates and develops supporting evidence for loss and damage claims arising from storage and movement of personal property and makes recommendations for use in affixing responsibility and settlement of claims.
  • Determines and advises customers on entitlements or procedures related to temporary storage of goods, weight allowances; prohibited items; and shipment of personal property including various methods available.
  • Plans, books, and routes personal property, estimates cost savings, time involved, time of arrival, storage in transit involved, and purposes.
  • Prepares and processes various applications for transportation or storage of a wide range of personal property and privately owned vehicles, including special items, of authorized civilian and military members.
  • Makes detailed cost comparisons to determine the best and most economical method of movement, and screens movement documents for correct accounting data.
