About The Position

This position leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
5 YEARS experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL AT TIME OF HIRE.

Inventory/stock control procedures
Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations
Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment

Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
Standing-prolonged periods of time
Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

Responsibilities

Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs and organize response of crews.
Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
Assists work performed by maintenance contractors.
Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
Operates light and heavy equipment.
Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage with surveying-related work.
Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
