About The Position

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: Assists during accident and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews. Assists in administration of the maintenance section. Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments. Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors. Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets. Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials. Operates light and heavy equipment. Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians. Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment. Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
  • 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application.
  • Must have or have obtained 'N' (tanker) endorsement and remove any transmission restriction within 60 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Incident management procedures
  • Inventory/stock control procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise and vibration
  • Subject to hazards - moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places, heat, and chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear - respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium Work: Left up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Standing - prolonged periods of time
  • Lifting - raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Visual Acuity - operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
  • Visual Acuity - operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment
  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
  • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
  • Required to work during emergency situations after hours, on weekends or holidays.
  • Required to work hour other than 8 to 5
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
