Our mission is to save and heal lives.    Position Description:   The Transplant Coordinator I position is responsible for the facilitation of the organ donation process by providing clinical support through donor evaluation, donor medical management, organ placement and recovery in compliance with CMS and AOPO standards.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) with current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) with at least two years’ experience in a critical care setting or,
  • Current state licensure as a Respiratory Therapist (RT) with at least two years’ experience in a critical care setting or,
  • One year of OPO experience and successful completion of Lifebanc’s Professional Development Program “Transplant Coordinator Track” or,
  • One year of OPO experience and successful completion of a master’s degree in Transplantation and Donation Sciences.
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) or current state licensure as a Respiratory Therapist (RT) if required for experience.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) required; certification must be approved by the American Heart Association (AHA) .
  • Basic computer skills and working knowledge of basic equipment.
  • Critical care experience to achieve hemodynamic stability in a potential organ donor as well as the ability demonstrate critical thinking to implement treatment to optimize donation.
  • Ability to assume responsibility without direct supervision, multitask and to demonstrate effective decision making within the scope of assigned authority
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including medical staff, hospital personnel and donor families.
  • Ability to represent the goals and plans of the organization in a professional manner.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgement.
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple members of the health care team to effectively manage a potential organ donor.
  • Ability to produce accurate records both written and electronic.
  • Ability to work independently from a remote location, office or hospital/DCU setting.
  • Current valid driver’s license and automobile insurance.
  • Physical stamina, including the ability to function at full capacity for hours consecutively.
  • Ability to lift amounts over 50 pounds and carry and move Lifebanc and hospital equipment.
  • Ability to perform direct patient care and transfers, assisting hospital personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Administrator on Call (AOC), conducts evaluation of organ referrals and collects information to assist in the determination of donor suitability to maximize donation opportunities as required by UNOS, CMS and AOPO standards and Lifebanc policies.
  • Covers assigned shifts to assure adequate coverage on a 24-hour basis including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Responds onsite to referring hospitals within service area within the specified timeframe.
  • Reviews and evaluates the patient’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR), to assist in the determination of donation eligibility and suitability.
  • Evaluates the patient’s neurological status, consulting with medical staff caring for the patient.
  • Serves as a member of the healthcare team and assists the Family Support Coordinators (FSC) and Hospital Services Coordinator (HSC) to identify and approach the appropriate next of kin for organ and tissue donation in compliance with CMS and AOPO standards.
  • Facilitates the coordination of the medical management of the donor, following established guidelines as well as medical director guidance to maintain adequate organ perfusion and oxygenation to maximize organ potential.
  • Medically manages potential pediatric and adult neurologically deceased donors as outlined in Lifebanc’s Clinical Practice Guidelines.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of hemodynamics including respiratory and ventilator management, electrolyte management and fluid balance.
  • Draws and/or assists in the donor blood collection for the donor evaluation.
  • Participates in all physical donor management in the Lifebanc Donor Care facility (DCF) including but not limited to the collection of specimens, medication and blood administration and ventilator management.
  • Ability to recognize and treat cardiac arrhythmias and lead resuscitation as needed.
  • Communicates all donor information accurately and timely to ensure transplantation.
  • Knowledge of National organ allocation policies and procedures.
  • Arranges all logistics of recovery teams including the transportation for organ recovery and organs for transplant.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.
