About The Position

The Transmission Planning Engineer position at FirstEnergy is responsible for overseeing transmission planning functions across the company's transmission and subtransmission systems. The role focuses on ensuring the safe and reliable operation of these systems, conducting studies related to generation and load interconnections, and developing capital portfolios for reliability-related projects. The engineer collaborates with various stakeholders, including operating companies and regulatory organizations, to support operational needs during critical events and to comply with industry standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of Engineering experience is required.
  • Proficient in the use of power system analysis software such as PSLF, PSS/E, TARA, and other related planning software.
  • Familiarity with PJM, RFC, and NERC practices, procedures, and requirements in transmission planning.
  • Demonstrated analytical and reasoning capabilities, along with refined oral and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate or Professional Engineer's (PE) License is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Providing technical support and studies to develop transmission and subtransmission infrastructure projects, plans, and capital budgets.
  • Performing timely completion of bulk and area transmission systems studies ensuring compliance with NERC, PJM and FE planning criteria.
  • Proposing and economically justifying recommended mitigation projects to any planning criteria deficiencies identified through system studies.
  • Preparing detailed operating solutions for capital projects that cannot be implemented in the needed timeframe.
  • Developing annual capital budgets by requesting cost estimates and preparing presentations associated with the capital portfolio process.
  • Conducting studies associated with the connection of new loads, generators, and merchant transmission projects.
  • Supporting Operations Centers during severe weather, heavy loading, or abnormal system events.
  • Working with various industry groups to meet requirements and promote FE ideas and methods.
  • Preparing responses to state and federal commission requests for information and providing technical testimony for regulatory inquiries.
  • Participating in the annual maintenance of the department's planning philosophy and other procedures.
