About The Position

This position assists in the installation, maintenance, rearrangement, operation, removal, and inspection of electrical transmission and distribution facilities. The role involves driving and operating line trucks and associated auxiliary equipment. The employee will perform duties in accordance with the Company's safety rules, regulations, and practices, reporting unsafe conditions and irregularities. Key tasks include assembling, installing, maintaining, removing, and inspecting conductors, fixtures, and other associated equipment on overhead facilities. Within the first six months, the employee must demonstrate the ability to operate Company equipment, climb poles and structures, work from bucket trucks or on ladders, and be comfortable working at heights. The role also involves supplying necessary tools and equipment to employees working aloft, assisting in setting poles (including in energized areas with proper PPE), and performing transmission right-of-way control such as cutting, spraying, or stacking trees and brush. Under direct supervision of a qualified person, the mechanic will assist in using live line tools, bare-hand techniques, rubber gloves and sleeves, and other accepted methods for transmission line maintenance. Operation of automotive equipment, including various types of line trucks with derricks and earth-boring equipment, truck-tractors, trailers, and winches for handling poles and material, is also required. The role includes transporting employees and equipment to work locations, identifying personal protective equipment and its purpose, and maintaining tools, equipment, and work areas. Record keeping and report submission are also part of the job. The employee will assist higher-classified employees, attend and participate in assigned training, and assist in training others. The selected candidate must reside within 45 minutes of the Kenova Crew Bldg (2002 Pine Street, Kenova, WV 25530).

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED
  • No previous work experience required.
  • Must be available to work overtime, call-out overtime and shift work, as required.
  • Travel requirements are expected > 50 % of the time.
  • This job requires "recommended" test results from HireVue Line Worker Virtual Job Tryout.
  • A physical abilities assessment is also required for this position.
  • Must demonstrate the ability and desire to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the duties and/or responsibilities of the key job (Transmission Line Mechanic A) in this job family.
  • Must acquire within such time frame as determined by the Company, the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next higher classification in the line of progression, or vacate the current job classification.
  • Employee shall obtain the appropriate valid commercial driver's license prior to the end of the designated probationary period.
  • Must meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law.
  • Must possess the ability to deal with employees, customers and the general public in a courteous and proper manner.
  • Considerable travel and overtime may be required with this position.
  • Must successfully complete Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
  • Reside within 45 mins of the Kenova Crew Bldg (2002 Pine Street, Kenova, WV 25530)

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in accordance with the Company's safety rules, regulations and practices and report unsafe conditions and practices. Report irregularities and abnormal conditions.

  • Demonstrate the ability to operate Company equipment, climb poles and structures, work from bucket trucks or on ladders and be at ease above the ground while performing the work during the first six months.
  • Supply employees working aloft the necessary tools and equipment required in the work.
  • Assist in setting poles, including poles in energized areas where proper personnel protective procedures are used.
  • Cut, spray or stack trees and brush while performing transmission right-of-way control.
  • Under direct supervision of a qualified person, assist in the use of live line tools, bare-hand techniques, rubber gloves and sleeves, and other accepted work methods to maintain transmission lines.
  • Operate automotive equipment and its associated equipment, and perform duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.
  • Operate line trucks of various types with derricks and earth-boring equipment.
  • Operate truck-tractors, both single and tandem-axle, trailers, both regular and fifth-wheel mounted, winches in handling poles and material, and transport employees and equipment to and from work locations.
  • Identify all personal protective equipment and its purpose including rubber gloves, blankets, temporary grounds, live line tools, and construction and maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Maintain tools, equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Maintain records and submit reports as required.
  • Assist employees of equal or higher classification.
  • Attend and participate in training as assigned and assist in the training of other employees.
  • Perform similar or less skilled work.
