About The Position

This Opportunity WSP is currently initiating a search for a Transmission Line Design Engineer for our Billings, MT or Salt Lake City, UT offices. Be involved in projects with our Power Delivery team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. Your impact Technical Leadership Perform and lead complex transmission line engineering tasks using tools such as PLS‑CADD, PLS‑POLE, PLS‑LITE, L-PILE, and FAD. Apply extensive knowledge of NESC, GO‑95, IEEE and other applicable transmission design standards. Oversee preparation of design criteria, structure loading, wire selection, foundations, material procurement, construction packages, and QA/QC of project deliverables. Serve as a technical advisor to resolve complex engineering challenges and provide precedent‑setting guidance to others. Project Execution & Delivery Lead and contribute to the planning, scoping, scheduling, budgeting, and execution of overhead transmission line projects. Ensure design packages meet WSP’s quality standards and client expectations while delivering projects on schedule and within budget. Support construction teams through shop drawing review, responses to contractor inquiries, field visits, and issue resolution. Innovation, Process Improvement & Strategic Contribution Identify opportunities to improve tools, workflows, and engineering methodologies across the Transmission Line group. Contribute original and innovative problem‑solving approaches in ambiguous or novel situations. Participate in business planning, proposal development, and strategy discussions to support growth in the Power Delivery market. Collaboration & Client Engagement Work closely with project managers, discipline leads, and cross‑functional teams to ensure coordinated delivery across the business unit. Serve as a key technical interface with clients, utilities, EPC partners, and permitting agencies. Develop and maintain strong professional networks across WSP and industry partners. Mentorship & Leadership Mentor junior and intermediate engineers; support technical training and staff development. Provide direction to teams on engineering priorities, decisions, and best practices. Lead by example in reinforcing WSP’s culture, values, and quality expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant post education experience in engineering and prior mechanical design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Demonstrated advanced technical expertise in overhead transmission design.
  • Proficiency with PLS‑CADD suite and familiarity with transmission codes and utility standards.
  • Strong communication skills for client, contractor, and internal coordination efforts.
  • Ability to independently make decisions on complex/ambiguous matters and guide team priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
  • Experience supporting business development, proposals, or strategic client interface.
  • Experience across multiple utilities, jurisdictions, or high‑voltage project types (69–500 kV)
