About The Position

Barr is seeking a transmission engineer to join our Minneapolis team. In this role, you will support our power delivery group by contributing to the design and engineering of high-voltage transmission and distribution lines for electric utilities and renewable energy clients. You’ll work with multidisciplinary project teams to develop design documents, specifications, and drawings for wood and steel pole structures, as well as perform foundation design and calculations. The ideal candidate for this position is a proactive problem solver with strong technical skills, has a collaborative mindset, and is an eager learner. You thrive in a high-energy environment, are client-focused, and demonstrate initiative and adaptability in meeting project goals.

Requirements

  • Education: bachelor’s degree in civil and/or structural engineering or a related discipline.
  • Licenses/certifications: Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certified or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
  • Software: familiarity with AutoCAD, Excel, and Word. Willingness to learn new programs such as PLS-CADD software.
  • Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Transmission line design and engineering : use PLS-CADD software to design transmission lines ranging from 69kV to 345kV, helping ensure technical accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
  • Specification development : create detailed construction and material specifications for wood and steel pole structures, supporting safe and efficient field implementation.
  • Foundation design : perform drilled pier foundation design and embedment depth calculations, contributing to the structural integrity of transmission systems.
  • Drawing production and review : produce and review design drawings including plan and profile views, framing, and assembly details to support project execution.
  • Field assignments : participate in short-term, out-of-town field assignments as needed to support project delivery and client engagement.
  • Software and documentation : use Microsoft Office and other engineering tools to document work, communicate with teams, and manage project data effectively.
  • Team collaboration : work closely with engineers and project managers in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment that values initiative, teamwork, and continuous learning.
