About The Position

The position of Translator/Interpreter at the Instructional Support Center involves providing essential support to language minority parents of English Learners at Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) and the International Newcomer Center (INC). The role requires a combination of translation, interpretation, and outreach activities aimed at enhancing parental engagement and support for students' educational progress. The successful candidate will be responsible for translating various documents and providing oral interpretations during formal meetings, ensuring effective communication between English and the designated second language.

Requirements

  • Valid Georgia driver's license required.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required.
  • Training using both English and a designated secondary language as medium required.
  • Experience with translation of technical documents required.
  • Experience in simultaneous interpretation of information required.
  • Two years of experience composing, editing, and translating materials in English and the designated second language preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in intercultural situations.
  • Ability to read and write effectively in standard English and the designated second language.
  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and idiomatic usage of English and the designated second language.
  • Word processing skills in English and the second language.
  • Ability to listen and interpret simultaneously.

  • Bilingual interpreter or translator certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with parent outreach activities to language minority parents of English Learners at GCPS and INC.
  • Translate various documents between English and the designated second language.
  • Provide oral interpretations between English and the designated language during formal district, school, and community meetings.
  • Increase engagement with and support of parents in their children's education through workshops and activities.
  • Read and review current research on best practices in engaging parents of English Learners.
  • Prepare and provide professional learning to GCPS educators on issues relating to educating language minority students.
  • Provide school leaders and staff with information on language communities in schools.
  • Represent the district as a liaison to linguistic community organizations.
  • Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretations at meetings and in legal situations.
  • Prepare accurate written translations of district-level documents.
  • Archive translated documents into the shared drive and review for accuracy.
  • Maintain currency on issues regarding parent engagement and technical translation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
