About The Position

Northeastern Junior College is seeking a motivated and student-centered professional to serve as Transition Specialist in the Monahan Learning Center . This position plays a vital role in supporting student success by working with a team of professionals to provide academic support to all learners, with a special focus on those who have significant barriers to academic success. The Transition Specialist oversees the provision of accommodations for students with disabilities and works closely with students, faculty, and campus partners to ensure students with disabilities receive appropriate support. This role also includes providing services to students participating in TRIO Student Support Services, a federally funded program designed to support first-generation college students, students from limited-income backgrounds, and students with disabilities. This role involves both direct student guidance and academic support programing in assisting the college in retaining at-risk students and helping them transfer to a four-year college and/or a substantial career pathway. Requirements

  • Master's degree in counseling, disabilities, special education or a closely related specialty
  • Counseling, group facilitation or teaching experience at post-secondary level
  • Knowledge of student development and counseling theories/practice
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population as well as faculty, community and administration
  • Personal, career, educational and crisis intervention counseling skills
  • Knowledge of standardized assessment administration
  • Experience in evaluating disabilities, including documentation and determination of appropriate educational accommodation
  • Knowledge of Assistive Technology
  • Willing to travel when necessary with students to universities and cultural experiences
  • Be passionate about supporting students who are first-generation, low-income, or have disabilities
  • Enjoy building student-centered initiatives and workshops that address student needs
  • Be comfortable working independently while collaborating across campus

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate documentation of disabilities to determine reasonable accommodations.
  • Conduct meetings with all identified students with disabilities or students with academic need.
  • Consult with faculty regarding educational needs of students with disabilities.
  • Keep accurate, detailed records of all student contacts for reporting purposes.
  • Provide referrals for updating and/or conducting assessments for disabilities.
  • Provide instruction and/or training to students and employees.
  • Coordinating research and procurement of Assistive Technology.
  • Complete voter registration paperwork with students who have documented disabilities; process monthly reporting to State of Colorado.
  • Provide academic advising for students who are undecided of their major field of study.
  • Assist in retaining at-risk students through guidance to completing a program at NJC, transfer to a four-year college and/or a substantial career pathway.
  • Coordinate and implement the Jump Start NJC program: promote and market the program, assist with the selection of program participants using TRIO eligibility guidelines, organize the program schedule and activities, provide leadership and oversight, and be responsible for implementing the day-to-day programing details of the program.
  • Coordinate TRIO workshops, transfer trips, and cultural experiences.
  • Assist in the selection of, provision of services to, and tracking of SSS students.
  • Coordinate Student Success Seminar for first year students and teach up to 3 credits/academic year of Student Success Seminar.
