About The Position

The position involves performing patrol duties and coordinating security and police needs within the VIA system and on all VIA properties. The role requires acting as a representative of VIA while collaborating with local agencies such as police and fire departments, ensuring safety and security across various transit facilities and services.

Requirements

  • High school education or G.E.D. and completion of Peace Officer Academy.
  • Valid current Texas Peace Officer's license and eligibility to be commissioned as a VIA Police Officer.
  • Valid Texas driver license with a good driving record.
  • Proficiency with an approved handgun.
  • Knowledge of the State Penal Code and criminal justice procedures.
  • Above average communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to prepare and write accurate and detailed reports.
  • Working knowledge of PCs and office software.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional college hours in law enforcement or military experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to calls for transit police service on VIA owned and/or controlled property.
  • Provides transit police services related to criminal and non-criminal matters on bus routes, at bus stops/shelters, on board buses and Paratransit vans.
  • Performs duties in accordance with VIA's SAFE Operations on buses and at transit facilities.
  • Investigates crimes, accidents, and incidents; arrests/detains suspects and violators; settles disputes; directs traffic; assists the public; issues VIA citations.
  • Interfaces with local police departments located within VIA's service area.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations and security surveys.
  • Develops crime prevention approaches and measures.
  • Prepares a variety of reports for review such as investigation results, activities, and status reports.
