About the position

The City of Albany is now accepting applications for on-call Transit Drivers/Operators. We are seeking dedicated and passionate individuals to operate diesel and gasoline-powered buses on established routes, assist passengers, and maintain non-mechanical aspects of the buses. In this role, you will be instrumental in providing safe, reliable, and courteous transportation services to our community. Responsibilities

  • Operates diesel- and gasoline-powered buses on established routes.
  • Assists disabled passengers and maintains non-mechanical upkeep on the buses.
  • Complies with regularly scheduled bus routes, collecting fares, and providing information to passengers as needed.
  • Safely and legally operates buses on various established assigned routes.
  • Reports any changes to assigned routes or stops and adheres to schedule without exceeding posted speed limits.
  • Demonstrates a courteous customer service attitude to the public and provides assistance when necessary.
  • Responsible for passengers' safety including the enforcement of passenger regulations such as no smoking or eating on the bus.
  • Responds to emergency situations and applies CPR and first aid.
  • Maintains buses including fueling and cleaning; assures supervisor is aware of routine service and repair needs of assigned vehicles.
  • Performs minor maintenance such as changing lamps as needed.
  • Maintains an accurate accounting of daily passenger sheets, vehicle maintenance check forms, and other related records.
  • Performs daily vehicle safety checks before operating the bus and reports any vehicle malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Responds to public inquiries about bus schedules and procedures.
  • Reports all bus and passenger accidents immediately to supervisor.
  • Complies with all federal, state, and local transit systems policies and procedures.
  • Represents the City of Albany by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Serves as a member of various City committees as assigned.
  • Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as assigned.
  • Maintains regular job attendance and adherence to working hours.

Requirements

  • One year's experience in driving trucks, buses, or similar equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to do the job.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon commercial driver's license (CDL) with a passenger endorsement.
  • First aid and CPR certification.
  • Extensive knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving techniques.
  • General knowledge of Albany geographical areas.
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment, first aid, and CPR.
  • Ability to safely drive a bus and establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, passengers, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and handle passengers with disabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and control passengers on the bus while performing driving duties.
