About The Position

The Transit Dispatcher III oversees the coordination and prioritization of responses to service requests and emergencies. This role supervises the deployment of transit personnel, materials, and equipment, ensuring optimal efficiency and adherence to transit schedules and policies. The dispatcher also mentors and provides guidance to lower-level dispatchers, performs complex clerical and administrative tasks related to transit operations, including data analysis, report preparation, and record maintenance, and performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Five and one half (5 ½) years of work experience which included one (1) or a combination of the following: public contact, customer service, clerical duties, radio telephone or telephone switchboard operation, or dispatching.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and oversees the operation of a radio-telephone communication system to receive and transmit messages for public transportation and paratransit services.
  • Supervises and coordinates the dispatching of transit personnel, materials, and equipment in response to service requests and emergencies.
  • Prioritizes and makes decisions on complex and critical dispatching situations.
  • Provides leadership, training, and guidance to lower-level dispatchers.
  • Ensures adherence to transit schedules, policies, and procedures.
  • Monitors and logs the status and location of transit vehicles and personnel.
  • Prepares and maintains detailed records and reports on transit operations.
  • Conducts data analysis to identify trends, improve operational efficiency, and inform strategic planning.
  • Answers inquiries from the public and provides information or refers to the appropriate authority.
  • Schedules and confirms trip reservations for public transportation and paratransit services, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in assignments.
  • Prepares and composes complex letters, reports, and other documents.
  • Maintains various files and records related to transit operations, such as vehicle and equipment logs, work orders, and time and leave records.
  • Assists in the preparation of departmental payroll and related documents.
  • Prepares purchase requisitions and checks invoices against receiving copies.
  • Conducts periodic physical inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
