IPS Transformers is seeking a Power Transformer Design Engineer to join our team to support a growing transformer remanufacturing business. This position will be based at our Denver Kingston Service Center where IPS repairs and remanufactures all type of transformers including substation, arc furnace, mobile, phase shifting, rectifying, regulating, and zig-zag transformers. The Design Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and supporting the design of liquid-filled power and special-application transformers up to 200MVA/345kV. This role blends engineering expertise with cross-functional collaboration, including partnering with IPS engineers, winders, manufacturing, testing, and field service teams to ensure accurate, efficient, and reliable transformer designs. The engineer leads design scope development, performs critical thermal, electrical, and mechanical calculations, prepares detailed engineering documentation, and provides ongoing technical support to internal teams, customers, and vendors. This position also contributes to design reviews, continuous improvement, R&D initiatives, and proposal support while staying current with industry standards and emerging technologies. Occasional North America travel is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in transformer coil and active-part design and repair.
  • Experience with established transformer coil design and short-circuit modeling software.
  • Strong knowledge of transformer applications and applicable industry standards.
  • Solid understanding of transformer electrical design, including thermal performance, dielectrics, short-circuit behavior, acoustics, and mechanical design.
  • Ability to perform detailed engineering calculations, including transformer turns, iron and copper losses, energization inrush current, and related parameters.
  • Ability to conduct advanced diagnostic assessments to troubleshoot transformer winding, core, and structural issues.
  • Experience performing root cause failure analysis (RCFA) and developing technical solutions for OEM and aftermarket design-related issues.
  • Ability to prepare failure reports with clear, data-driven technical analysis.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to develop component and part drawings using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar CAD tools.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize competing tasks.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to travel freely within the U.S., Canada, and Mexico without visa sponsorship.
  • Team-oriented professional with strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Innovative, detail-oriented mindset with a continuous improvement focus.

Responsibilities

  • Design and/or reverse engineer transformer coils and active parts for liquid-filled power and special-application transformers up to 200 MVA, 345 kV class.
  • Identify opportunities for upgrade and optimization in active-part designs to meet customer performance, efficiency, and reliability requirements.
  • Partner with IPS Transformer Engineers and Transformer Winders to enhance legacy design, manufacturing, and training processes.
  • Develop and implement design work scopes for liquid-filled power and special-application transformers.
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and design documentation in accordance with industry standards and customer requirements.
  • Perform thermal, electrical, mechanical, and short-circuit calculations to support transformer design and performance validation.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, testing, and field service teams to ensure design accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance with project specifications.
  • Provide technical support and design expertise to internal teams, customers, vendors, and external stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Participate in design reviews, root cause analyses, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality and design efficiency.
  • Stay current with industry standards, codes, and technological advancements related to transformer design and manufacturing.
  • Support proposal and quotation activities by providing technical input and cost estimates as needed.
  • Assist with implementation of safety, quality, and productivity improvement initiatives.
  • Partner with IPS Business Teams to support R&D innovation projects and activities.
  • Travel within North America based on business needs. Estimated travel is 10–15% when based in Denver and up to 35–40% if working remotely.
  • Relocation to Denver is strongly preferred within the first year; strong candidates open to longer-term relocation may still be considered, even if seeking lower travel in the short term.
