About The Position

Under occasional supervision, the Training Sergeant serves as a command staff officer and provides leadership for all training and investigative functions within the Columbia College Police Department. The position is responsible for overseeing departmental training programs, managing investigations, maintaining compliance with state training regulations, supervising personnel, and ensuring the overall safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This role enforces College policies, as well as local, state, and federal laws, and requires responding to both routine and emergency situations as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; college degree preferred.
  • Completion of required training and education at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Certification in Basic Law Enforcement, Basic Instructor Development, and Practical Crime Scene Investigations.
  • Four (4) years of progressive law enforcement experience.
  • NCIC certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • Thorough knowledge of law enforcement practices, investigative procedures, and training methods.
  • Ability to lead and supervise personnel effectively.
  • Strong decision-making skills under stress or dangerous conditions.
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple agencies and maintain professional relationships.
  • Proficiency in firearms use, emergency response, and crisis management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to accuracy, safety, and compliance.
  • Proficiency in using law enforcement technology, computers, and reporting systems.
  • Ability to operate a variety of law enforcement equipment including firearms, vehicles, and communication tools.
  • Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and perform physical activities such as walking, running, climbing, and restraining individuals.
  • Ability to work in stressful and potentially hazardous environments.
  • Must maintain required physical fitness and defensive capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Command and oversee training programs for all departmental staff.
  • Ensure compliance with training requirements set forth by the State of South Carolina.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and conduct regular training sessions for officers.
  • Manage equipment inventory, issuance of gear, and ensure operational readiness.
  • Supervise departmental personnel in daily operations.
  • Perform routine patrols of college property, respond to service calls, emergency situations, and public disturbances.
  • Apprehend suspects, issue parking tickets, warrants, and state summons.
  • Provide traffic control, security escorts, and assist stranded motorists.
  • Secure crime scenes and conduct or assist with investigations.
  • Respond to and manage high-risk or critical incidents in alignment with the College Security and Emergency Plans.
  • Lead and support criminal investigations on campus.
  • Work closely with outside agencies including FBI, SLED, county, and local law enforcement on special cases, narcotics investigations, and crisis situations.
  • Prepare case files and provide court testimony as required.
  • Conduct background investigations on job applicants.
  • Provide protective services for visiting dignitaries and special events.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and submit incident, accident, and investigative reports in a timely manner.
  • Interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, outside agencies, and the community.
  • Ensure equipment and vehicles are properly maintained and operational.
  • Participate in mandatory physical fitness activities and firearms proficiency training.
  • Remain on-call at all times for emergency situations.
