About The Position

Shrub Oak International School (SOIS) is a therapeutic day and residential school for autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions. Located in northern Westchester County, Shrub Oak offers unparalleled educational opportunities for autistic students in a family-centric, supportive environment. We offer a variety of programs to meet the needs of students across the spectrum, and our curriculum is based on the most advanced and successful evidence-based clinical and academic approaches in ASD education. As a school, SOIS maintains a smoke-free environment to ensure the health and safety of our students, employees, and community. Smoking or vaping of any kind is strictly prohibited indoors, outdoors, and during off-campus activities, with enforcement measures in place including smoke/vape detectors and video surveillance. We are a residential boarding school located on a scenic 127-acre campus which includes multiples building and a working farm for student programming. The work environment will include both indoor and outdoor spaces, though mostly inside the educational and residential environment. The building has 6 floors accessible by staircases and some accessible by an elevator. SOIS is a community of dedicated professionals that work together to find meaning with and for our students. You have a passion for working with the autism population and ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff. You are a customer service guru, with the ability to establish and maintain relationships with a diverse, transdisciplinary group of individuals and influence collaboration at all levels, including up and sideways in structure. You are an expert multi-tasker, with the ability to prioritize proactive approaches during crisis situations, maintain composure. You can meet the physical demands of training, crises response, and administration you must be able to sit and stand for sustained periods of time including bending, stretching, walking up and down stairs (building has 6 floors), around a hilly campus with both paved and gravel pathways as needed. May also require walking between floors or between buildings at a moment’s notice. May need to lift/move boxes up to 25 pounds and move or rearrange furniture.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience working with students with developmental disabilities is required.
  • TCIS Licensed Trainer credential is required.
  • MA/MS in related field is preferred + 3+ years of extensive hands-on experience in crisis prevention, with an emphasis on verbal de-escalation techniques applied to the autism population is required, including writing Incident Reports and facilitating the Staff Debriefing Process.
  • Ability to deliver Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) training, including refreshers and observation with corrections in the department is required.
  • Must undergo regular retraining in TCIS to maintain certification and competency.
  • Experience conducting live observations and coaching in the moment to maintain training standards and staff competency is required.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning theory and ability to deliver comprehensive and experiential learning programs is required.
  • Excellent computer skills, specifically with Microsoft 365 is required.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and use data to inform training strategies is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with children with ASD is preferred.
  • A BA/BS in psychology, human services or mental health is preferred.
  • Experience implementing robust training programs in a 24/7/365 organization is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Implements and tracks a comprehensive learning program that engages staff across the organization.
  • Collaborating closely with all departments, the Trainer will translate key learning deliverables into actionable on-the-job practices that enhance student engagement and support staff upskilling on a consistent basis.
  • Co-ownership amongst Trainers for the execution of staff training including all Onboarding, Compliance, and Ongoing Education for upskilling and continuous learning, keeping SOIS staff at the cutting edge of support services for our student population.
  • Will assist the HR director and Clinical in designing and implementing feedback systems and data collection methods to ensure training approaches remain cutting-edge and aligned with Shrub Oak’s evolving needs, while conducting live observations, crises response, and providing mentoring to maintain training standards and staff competency directly in the departments.
  • Designs creative learning opportunities that flexibly meet the needs of a 24/7/365 organization and uses appropriate learning vehicles to reach learners.
  • Deliver and track TCIS training, including refreshers, to new and existing staff according to TCIS compliance standards, including on weekends as needed.
  • Delivers regular on-the-floor development to student-facing staff, including responding to crises for assistance, intervention, mentoring and/or as a Crises Duty Manager.
  • Make recommendations to align overall training and development strategy into actionable and sustainable training plans for SOIS.
  • Remain current on new learning and other industry approaches to remain at the forefront of adult learning theory.
  • Supports performance improvement plans in all departments through ongoing training
  • Reviews and analyzes data to enhance the training content and delivery across all programs.
  • Makes recommendations to the HR Director based on data analysis.
