About The Position

The Train Operator Apprentice is an entry level position requiring training in the operation of diesel locomotives and loading and unloading of commodities such as ash and western coal. This position involves performing switching operations, light maintenance repairs to locomotives and railcars, and complying with Vistra safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. The work is of a physical nature and performed in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions. The apprentice must be willing to work a rotating 12-hour shift and overtime as scheduled or assigned. This is a bargaining unit position represented by IBEW 2337, with an hourly rate of $28.81.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Knowledge of basic math, reading, and writing skills required.
  • Previous railroad operations or maintenance experience is not required but would be a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Performs switching operations.
  • Performs light maintenance repairs to locomotives and railcars.
  • Complies with the Vistra safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Complies with Vistra Railroad Operating Rule Book and Local Operating Procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
