About The Position

Denver Transit Operators, (DTO) is a privately held company that has a 29-year contract with RTD to operate and maintain the new commuter rail system within the Greater Denver Metro area. We currently have opportunities to hire Train Dispatchers and are seeking committed individuals and dependable individuals to join our team. What Will You Do? In this position you will be responsible for directing the safe and efficient movement of trains over an assigned dispatching district in accordance with schedules, railroad operating rules and procedures and FRA regulations. Direct and monitor commuter rail train traffic by using the Train Management Dispatch System (TMDS) to establish routes, signals and time points to safely control train movement as scheduled. Monitor the status of the traction power system, remotely controlling substation and wayside devices as conditions warrant. Ensure the proper flow of wide-ranging information to various operating departments, the general public and outside agencies during normal operations and emergencies. Coordinate safe track access for infrastructure work on the right-of-way with the efficient movement of trains. Maintain detailed and accurate records of train movements, authorizations and permits and incidents. Record documentation into computerized software applications, including TMDS, Asset Works, etc. Manage unexpected events and emergency situations to protect the public, employees and railroad property Notify and coordinate all internal staff and external emergency responders and direct activities in cases of emergency. Coordinate with RTD or other agencies to provide alternate route service during emergencies. Record and relay reports of equipment and infrastructure defects using computerized software applications. Complete all other duties as assigned. This is a safety sensitive position subject to the rules & regulations of the Federal Railroad Administration and their Drug & Alcohol policy. What Will You learn? Our Train Dispatchers play an important part in keeping our locomotives on the move. We will teach you the dynamic workings of our trains, as well as the rules and regulations that must be followed to successfully dispatch our trains.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 year’s work experience as a train dispatcher, air-traffic controller or 911 emergency operator.
  • Experience in railroad operations preferred.
  • Strong computer skills in dispatching software applications and equipment and MS Office Suites highly preferred.
  • Ability to provide clear instructions and comprehend complex information over the radio, intercom and telephone.
  • Ability to assess situations rapidly and identify appropriate courses of action.
  • Ability to work nights, holidays and weekends, including working overtime as needed.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must pass a preemployment physical examination.
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug and alcohol screening and be willing to comply with the DTO Drug and Alcohol Policy.
  • This is a Union position you will need to join the Brotherhood of Signalmen as a condition of employment.
  • There is also a 4 weeklong rules training class that you will need to successfully complete in order to continue employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in railroad operations preferred.
